Willem de Kooning academy – Rotterdam
My twenty-fourth entry to Norms Thursday Doors. Collega doors. A sturdy door. Keeps the artists-that-are-no-artists outside. Because this is THE Art Academy of The Netherlands. Only the best may enter 🙂
The Willem de Kooning Academy is the art school of Rotterdam and part of the Hogeschool Rotterdam, a university of applied sciences. It is regarded as one of the most prestigious art schools in the country and No. 1 in advertising and copywriting. Previously called the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Visual Arts), it has since 1998 carried the name of alumnus Willem de Kooning (1904–1997). Willem de Kooning was born in north Rotterdam and graduated in decoration art (now styling). He went to New York at the age of 22 and became a frontman of the Abstract Expressionismpainting movement of the 1940s and 1950s.

I love the carved stone on both sides of the doors. So perfect for an Art Academy.

That’s a serious-looking door, Geert. It looks as though it would take at least two large men to open it.

Now that is a serious hefty door. It looks like it must weigh a ton. Nice find 🙂

I love the almost medieval feel to the photo – the stone work, the heavy metal doors … and then the quirkiness brought by the graffiti once you look closer!
