Doors with a (double) history – City hall Gouda
My sixteenth entry to Norms Thursday Doors. Doors with a history. By far the most spectaculair doors in Gouda and they rank fifth on my the Dutch Top Ten #thursdaydoors board. (Brings me on idea: the top ten doors in the Netherlands!) A double history. But first the history of the City Hall.
The city hall (Stadhuis) in Gouda is the oldest gothic City Hall in the Netherlands and was built in 1450. It is located at the main square of the city, the Markt, and is one of the best known monuments of Gouda. The architect was Jan III Keldermans, from the famous Flemish Keldermans family of architects, who were also responsible for several other city halls and churches around the Netherlands and Flanders.
The building can be visited during weekdays given that there are no wedding ceremonies. The interior dates from the 17th and 18th century. bron tripadvisor
The second history of these doors is my own. I married in the City Hall in August 2008 after knowing my wife to be since 1978. We lived in several parts of the world before settling down in Gouda. And you never know the future, but we are likely to stay here. In the third photo you see the chairs we will sit on for the ceremony.

And of course, there’s always cheese. 🙂 Love the personal story with this, Geert, What a lovely building.

It always makes me chuckle to myself when I realize once again just how “new” our old buildings are here in the U.S. 1450!!! Wow. What a beautiful example of Gothic architecture – on of my favorite styles – and what a lovely wedding picture! Your bride is beautiful.

Thanks! It was a beautiful day. The Town Hall of Gouda is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the Netherlands. But for me and Inez, my wife it has of course special memories. Gouda has another treasure: the st-John cathedral. I will make a special post in one of the next thursday doors 🙂
