Weekly Photo Challenge – Converge

Butterfly Sailing

One of my favorite exercises to teach my sailing pupils after a long day training is ‘Butterfly sailing’. Not an official technique, and certainly not something you want to do with beginners, it requirers a good sail trim and balance in the boat. The boats are tied together and have their sails set before the wind. However, the boats are connected bow to stern, so one boat has the wind from the front and the other directly from behind. The immediate reaction is a slow turning in circles. The crew jumps from one boat on the other forcing the boat to haul upon the wind and making headway. Is this picture the sails converge nice and seem to blend together. butterfly sailing converge Weekly photo challenge – converge
